The maths

What an STC is worth to your business

Each certificate is a dollar amount on your rate card. Multiply by the number a job creates and you can see what the install is really earning you.

The number of STCs depends on the size of the system, the solar zone of the postcode and how many years of deeming are left. The scheme runs to 2030, so the deeming period shrinks by a year every January. For 2026 it is five years.

The example is a guide. The exact figure for a job comes from the Clean Energy Regulator calculator, and we are happy to run it with you. Compare it with your current trader on the pricing page.

Worked example
System
6.6 kW, Zone 3
Zone rating
1.382
Deeming
5 years (2026)

6.6 x 1.382 x 5 = 45.61

= 45 STCs (rounded down)

45 x $38.50 = $1,732.50

Zone ratings: 1.622 (Zone 1), 1.536 (Zone 2), 1.382 (Zone 3), 1.185 (Zone 4). Rate shown is today's rate card and moves with the market.

Questions

STC questions, answered

What is an STC and who can create one?
A Small-scale Technology Certificate represents one megawatt hour of renewable energy a small solar PV system is deemed to produce over its remaining life under the scheme. The system owner is entitled to the certificates, and they usually assign that right to the installer or an agent in exchange for an upfront discount on the install.
How many STCs will a system create?
The formula is system size in kW, multiplied by the zone rating for the postcode, multiplied by the deeming period in years, rounded down. For 2026 the deeming period is five years because the scheme ends in 2030. The Clean Energy Regulator calculator gives the exact figure for any address.
How fast do you pay?
Established partners are settled within 24 hours of sign-off. Your first claim as a new partner clears in 48 to 72 hours while we verify your details, then you move to 24-hour settlement.
Are there any fees?
No. There are no processing, admin or registry fees and no subscription. The rate on the rate card is the amount you are paid per certificate.
When is my rate locked?
The rate is locked when a complete claim is lodged. If something is missing, the desk tells you straight away so the claim can be completed at the rate you saw.
What do you check before lodging?
The compliance desk reviews the assignment form, electrical compliance certificate, accreditation details, invoice, single line diagram and the photo set against our resource checklists. We catch problems before they cost you time.
Do I need to be a Clean Energy Council accredited installer?
Solar PV installs that create STCs must be carried out by an accredited installer, with a CEC accredited designer where required, using approved panels and inverters. We check accreditation details as part of onboarding.
Can I trade STCs for batteries and hot water as well?
Yes. One desk handles solar, battery STCs, hot water and heat pump STCs and VEECs in Victoria, all on one rate card.
